The photo above(left) was taken in Dec 2010. I was a young blogger and I was extremely enthusiastic about makeup. I used to watch beauty gurus on YouTube whenever I had the chance and try emulate what they were doing. This photo was the end product of my first YouTube Tutorial. The title of the tutorial was “Ocean Inspired makeup” Can you see that blue green going on? Girrrllll I thought I was slaying…boy was a wrong! That video did not last 24 hours on that channel.
I made a couple of mistakes on this video….both makeup-wise and filming. I filmed this video at night in the bathroom and I was at the Coast for holiday, I was sweating like a pig in the dark with blue eye shadow on. I thank the Lord Jesus I deleted that video from my computer files and my life. I’m going to share my 5 secrets with you that will improve your makeup game;
Invest In Your Tools
Whether you’re a farmer, a craftsman or a mechanic, you need good tools to help you do your job. Tools are meant to last you a long time hence invest in quality tools. This is in regards to makeup brushes and blenders, they are a necessity in your everyday makeup routine. That look I did 6 years ago? I had no makeup brushes hence it would have been impossible to blend my eyeshadow.
Keep It Simple Stupid!
So you’re a beginner in makeup and you want to look like Kim Kardashian? So much goes into getting a certain look and sometimes people are quick to assume that it’s an easy process. It’s not! Start from the basics, foundation, powder and eyebrows and whatever else you’re comfortable with. Once you lock that down move on to more complex things.
Learn, Practice and Capture
There are millions of YouTube videos on makeup, watch and pick up tips and tricks. Everyone’s technique is different to suit their preference and skin type. Practice on yourself and learn and see what works and what doesn’t. Also be brutally honest with yourself, or get a brutally honest friend who is not afraid to share his/her opinion on your makeup. Capture your makeup and keep it, one day you’ll be able to see how far you’ve come. You can also pay for a one on one class from your favorite makeup artist. Never stop learning.
Use a Primer
This is both for face and for eyeshadow. I started using primes in 2014 and I noticed a huge change in my makeup looks. A primer creates a barrier between your skin and your foundation, some reduce the pore size and other give you an illuminating glow. As for eyeshadow primer it makes the eyeshadow pop. stay on longer and avoids creasing.
In order to grow you have to get out of the box. Try new products, new techniques and styles. If it doesn’t work you can always wash it off and try again. If a product doesn’t suit you, swap or give a friend. At the end of the day it’s just makeup, it has the power to highlight our best features and conceal our imperfections. Have fun with it!
